Afterschool and Community
Learning Network
Afterschool and Community Learning National Resource Network was initiated to provide guidance to state, local,
national, and international organizations and agencies interested in improving policies and partnerships to expand
the availability of afterschool and community learning centers and to improve the quality of educational opportunities
for children at-risk. The Network also helps state afterschool networks develop strategies that are likely to help them
sustain their work and expand their impact. In addition the Network analyzes trends, conducts studies and develops
papers and presentations on topics of contemporary interest (e.g., education reforms in school finance cases,
linking afterschool to education success, parent involvement, sustainability of afterschool programs, international
education). The Network is principally funded by the CS Mott Foundation and given support and encouragement from
the School of Education at the College of Charleston.

Dr. Terry Peterson is the director of the Afterschool and Community Learning National Resource Network. He also
holds the position of Senior Fellow in the School of Education Health and Human Performance in the College of
Charleston.  He was elected chair of the

Center for Summer Learning at John Hopkins University. He serves on a number of local, state, national and

Excellence in Education,
the National School Board Association Committee on Extended Learning, the South Carolina
Arts in Basic Curriculum Committee, the Mayor of Charleston's School Reform Committee, and the Mongolian
Consortium of Universities. He is involved in international education efforts, most recently in Mongolia, Brazil, South
Korea and Denmark.
